Planning a week in Oaxaca means splitting your time between exploring ancient sites, watching skilled artisans at work, and eating your way through what many consider Mexico’s food capital. Pronounced “wah-HAH-kah,” this region feels like stepping into a living museum where traditions aren’t just preserved—they’re thriving. The colonial buildings in Oaxaca City create perfect backdrops for wandering, while markets overflow with hand-woven textiles, intricate woodcarvings, and that distinctive black pottery you’ll want to bring home.

The city feels like different worlds within one place—leafy, stylish Condesa; bohemian Coyoacán with Frida Kahlo’s blue house; and the historic Centro Histórico where Aztec ruins stand next to colonial buildings.

Chilaquiles verde might be the perfect comfort food—crispy tortilla chips soaked in tangy green salsa, topped with a perfectly fried egg, crumbled cheese, a drizzle of crema, and slices of avocado. It’s simple but somehow feels like a special treat.

What makes this dish so Mexico City is how versatile it is—fancy enough for weekend brunch in trendy Roma Norte, but also perfect as late-night comfort food after exploring the city’s nightlife. It works for any meal of the day!

The authentic michelada is Mexico’s answer to the Bloody Mary—beer (usually a light lager like Modelo or Corona) mixed with lime juice, various sauces (Worcestershire, hot sauce, maybe a touch of soy sauce), and spices in a glass rimmed with salt and tajín.
